Ahead of the move

It is important to have a collar tag made for your pet with your name and contact details on it, ready to put on your pet in time for move day. This is so your pet has a better chance of being returned safely should your pet escape or get lost during the move.

Just like us, pets can suffer from travel sickness. If you are moving a long way from home, it might be a good option for you to ask your vet about medication to make the journey easier for your pets.

Animals sometimes become scared/stressed by strange/new people coming in and out of the house to carry out the removals.

Therefore make arrangements for your pets to stay with a friend, neighbour or relative on the day of the move and even a few days afterwards if needed.

If your pet has a microchip, remember to get it updated.

Update your pet insurance policy before you move and remember to register them with a new veterinary practice.

Bear in mind that moving house can be just as stressful for your pet as it is for yourself. You may be worried that your pet will not settle into your new home, or that your pet may end up back at your old house if it is not too far away from your new house.

However, by taking a few simple steps you can help ensure the safety and security of your pet and make sure their move is as stress free as possible.

On the day of the move

The day of the move can be just as distressing for your pet as it can be for you and your family; their usual routine is disrupted and they’re surrounded by lots of stress and commotion.

We suggest not putting your pets in an isolated room as it can cause them further stress. If you can try to block off an area (with boxes for example) for your pets so they don't get in the way.

Be sure to transport your dog safely - in a secure and properly constructed cage (if accessible).

As you load your car, you must leave plenty of room for your pet, making it more comfortable and relaxed on the way to their new home.

You must not transport your pet in a closed boot, loose in the front foot well of the car or in the removals van.

Moreover, if you are travelling a long distance and take a break, NEVER leave your pet inside a hot car and always ensure the car is well ventilated.

With cats, make sure they are indoors before the removals commence. If they’re outside, you may not be able to get them in by the time you have to leave your old home for the new one. We also recommend using a calming pheromone spray for your cat.

After the move

Once you have moved in usually your pets will need some time to adjust to their new home/garden. Here are a few tips that will help your pet get used to the new, strange surroundings.

	Show your pets their new beds and take them round the rooms that they are allowed access too.

	Make sure your garden is secure by having a look to see fences not broken and that there are not any gaps.

	Return to your old routine as soon as you can.
