The rise in self storage facilities

A huge boom in the UK's storage sector

In a recent poll, UK residents rent more self-storage facilities than those in Europe- a massive four times more than the French and nine times more than people in Germany. Subsequently this has caused a huge boom in the UK’s storage sector.

According to property advisors Cushman & Wakefield, Britain now houses almost half of Europe’s self-storage units with a whopping 42.2m sq ft of space in total. In 2016, 24 new self-storage facilities opened in the United Kingdom- the largest number in any country in Europe. What’s more, occupancy increased by nearly 3% in the last year, when comparing 2016 to 2017.

In terms of demographics two thirds of self-storage customers are aged between 40-65 years old, with 81% being aged 35-70, demonstrating that the younger population are far less likely to use storage facilities than the older generations.

It’s also revealed that separated and divorced individuals are twice as likely to use storage facilities compared to those who are single.

Chief executive of the UK Self Storage Association, Rennie Shafer, recently reported: ‘44% of business customers have used storage facilities for in excess of three years, compared with 31% of personal customers’.

Shafer also said: ‘The longest standing customer in the survey began renting their unit in 1987’, demonstrating how self-storage facilities provide a backbone for many, offering reassurance and peace of mind that their personal or business belongings are safe when they choose to store in a secure, safe facility.
